Before I cleaned it (and broke the ribbon cable. Oops!) By the way, I did hop into diagnostic mode and confirmed everything apart from the drive, FireWire and headphone jack.
It was really easy to clean the dirt off. I'm leaving the scratches, they're a part of the iPod. ...just like the email the original owner engraved onto this thing
For anyone wondering what the shiny bit is by the drive ribbon, I initially went the cheap route but it didn't work. It's part of the antistatic bag the generic green board came in
