On December 4th, 1971, During a performance by Frank Zappa and the Mothers in Lake Geneva Switzerland, a fan fired a flare gun and caught the hall on fire. The casino at Montreux burned down, destroy all the equipment. The event was immortalized by Deep Purple in the song Smoke On The Water.

  • looking north on central park west (dakota on the left) with beatles' fans as far as the eye can see the day after the murder
  • a tiny portion of the tributes left at the dakota
  • fans stayed all night in the rain. no one could believe this had happened and after word spread that john was actually dead...people were even more stunned.
  • yoko asked for a minute of silence be observed in central park. fans came from all over the world to be there. the city seemed to stop for that minute too.
  • dec 8 1980...i heard the news today, oh boy.... john lennon was murdered in front of his home in the dakota building on 72nd street and central park west nyc. any music fan that was around at that time, can probably tell you exactly where they were when they heard the news....
