I neutralized the color of the chess pieces. It’s now easier to distinguish the exposed wood from the highlights. Still—the highlights are too strong and obtrusive.
I selected all the highlights and applied a contextual fill in Photoshop, and reduced the opacity a bit.
I did the same thing to the white chess pieces—correcting the colors and reducing the intensity of the highlights.
