The German battleship Scharnhorst was sunk on December 26, 1943 at the Battle of the North Cape. Out of a crew of 1,968 only 36 men survived. She was one of the first capital ships built by the Germans since WWI. She recorded the longest range hit by a ship's guns at 25.6 km (15.9 mi). [1,240 x 779]
