Bhainsrorgarh, India. Dramatically placed atop sheer cliffs between two rivers, the ruins of this large ancient fortress have been inhabited from at least the 2nd century BC. It was conquered in the Middle Ages by the brilliant military strategist Ala-ud-din Khilji. I'll post more in the comments.

Sao Jorge, Portugal. The first fortification on this hill in Lisbon dates to the 2nd century. In the 10th century, the fortifications were rebuilt by the Moors and then famously besieged in the 2nd Crusade (the only notable success of that failed crusade). I'll post much more in the comments.

Lahore, Pakistan. This is a reconstruction of the massive fortifications that protected the old city of Lahore (2.56 square km). Dismantled by the British in the 19th century, these fortifications consisted of two thick concentric walls, a moat, and numerous gates (each with a huge barbican).

Rajgad, India. Known as the king of forts, the ruins of this staggeringly huge mountain fortress blanket several different plateaus thousands of feet high surrounded by cliffs. Once claimed unconquerable, It covers 40 kilometres and is over 2,000 years old. I'll post much more in the comments.

Mycenae, Greece. The great citadel of Mycenae was one of the major centres of Greek civilization during the 2nd millennium BC. According to legend, Mycenae was the capital of Agamemnon, the king who sacked the city of Troy. I'll post more (including some reconstructions) in the comments.
