In 1812, following the battle of Krasny, Marshal Ney and 3000 men were cut off by 60,000 Russians. After trying to force their lines, they crossed the Dniepr river and covered 90 km of open ground, surrounded by cossacks and rejecting 3 offers to surrender. 800 men rejoined the army. On 8 July 1758, less than 4,000 French troops defeat 18,000 British at the battle of Carillon, present-day Ticonderoga. The British general, Abercrombie, had been overconfident in victory.
