Robert Zubrin just announced our international team of Nexus Aurora has won the competition! (and $10k) out of 176 excellent teams participating, we are very proud to have won! Read our full report here: nexusaurora.com/report.pdf3yr ⋅ NexusAurora ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Mars base. Work in progress, a new design concept I am trying out. Pressure below the tent is 40kpa, with the habitable structures having a comfy 80Kpa air inside. This design resolves many issues I though we may have had in the Original Nexus Aurora city design. What do you think?3yr ⋅ VeryViscous ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Without open spaces, the Martian colony will feel like a trap. For the sake of a comfortable life on Mars we are proposing big open spaces as centres of public life. An estimated 5h per day is the daily safe limit of radiation exposure within this particular habitat4yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
First Luna base concept. I am busy working on a very early moon base. Its my first concept, so let me know what you think it will really look like, and where I am wrong.3yr ⋅ VeryViscous ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Would you like a 140 m2 apartment on Mars? This is the first Nexus Aurora habitat prototype.4yr ⋅ jakobbjohansen ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Why we don't do domes on Mars. We see a lot of people coming in to design Domes for Mars habitats. Well, we don't like them, and this is why.4yr ⋅ MaNaeSWolf ⋅ r/NexusAurora
To accommodate 1 million habitants, large farm lands will be required to provide sufficient food for everyone in the colony. We are already testing ideas for construction materials.4yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Calling all robotics engineers - we're sending a robotic farm to the Mars Desert Research Station! Head over to mdrs-farmm to help out with a big design-and-build project3yr ⋅ _albertross ⋅ r/NexusAurora
The medicine team has been busy developing a highly flexible, scalable modular medicine production platform for Mars. This project paves the way towards a sustainable Mars colony architecture. We need additional feedback from biotech experts4yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Bio-reactors finally done. There is one clear 900m long continuous pipe of 250mm wide. Each one holds 44 kl. There is space inside the structure to still add feeding material into the pipes mid way. The outer plastic completely covers the structure.4yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Proposed Habitat for Nexus Aurora. The use of multiple spheres creates sail vaults in tension from the internal pressures. a minimal of 3m water on top of the vaults create sufficient radiation proofing. This allows for the vaults to have clear roofs letting in natural light.4yr ⋅ MaNaeSWolf ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Lunar/Mars dust solution: maybe a one time disposable 1kg hazmat suit over the xEMU? Keep the dust off the pricey stuff?2yr ⋅ perilun ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Hematite distribution map. Wahoo, we got lucky !!! There are some spots near the base in Hellas Planitia, not much elsewhere! Thanks AdvancedCandle!3yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Have you considered the simple architecture of just tethering two space craft together? That way you only need to take the tether with you and you do not need all the other systems. The Starship even has the mounting hardware in the nose because it needs to be lifted by crane. credit: Jakob3yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
For a Mars colony to be self-sustaining an own medicine production line is needed. At the beginning the Mars city we will be dependent on shipments from Earth but at some stage, the city has to set up its own production facility4yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
So how do you land multiple starships on the same pad, while keeping them and the colony safe? You use a crater!4yr ⋅ jakobbjohansen ⋅ r/NexusAurora
The VR and work on modelling is progressing fast. We are exploring various ideas for the look and feel of all sorts of objects.4yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Each school building is designed to house 4 separate schooling grades in the most positive environment we can manage on Mars4yr ⋅ SpaceInstructor ⋅ r/NexusAurora
If I hosted a design review for a concept at HeroX.com would people participate? I have made $2,500 in competitions here in 2021, and an looking to give some back to others.2yr ⋅ perilun ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Could one use a short burst of propulsive thrust in the direction of travel in the upper atmosphere to induce enhanced drag (like F9 does) to save on fuel for a return to LEO from the Moon or Mars?2yr ⋅ perilun ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Interesting debate ongoing. Do we need tunneling on Mars? Compared to surface constructions they are extremely expensive. On the other hand there are major economical and safety reasons to consider in favor of tunneling. Leave your thoughts in the comments.4yr ⋅ JetFuelCereals ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Life before CAD is almost unimaginable. And yet they build, pyramids, cathedrals and moon rockets. With the tools we have we have to crack this going to Mars business, or face the collective face palm of all the engineers who had to work with pen an paper, or just some string with a rock attached!4yr ⋅ jakobbjohansen ⋅ r/NexusAurora
Some of the ideas circulated around regolith housing. Two major design philosophies are being discussed, mixing regolith with ice vs mixing regolith with polymers. So far it is becoming aparent that the habitats need to be designed as pressure vessels due to Mars atmospheric conditions4yr ⋅ JetFuelCereals ⋅ r/NexusAurora
